Commercial buildings change. The electrical system usually doesn’t.

A building that was designed 20, 30, or 50 years ago may now be supporting new HVAC equipment, remodeled tenant spaces, commercial kitchens, machinery, EV chargers, computers, and equipment that didn’t exist when the service was installed. Eventually, adding “just one more thing” stops being simple.

A full electrical panel is usually the first clue, but a full panel and an overloaded electrical service aren’t the same thing. Sometimes there’s plenty of capacity, and you simply need additional distribution. Other times, the panel is only the tip of the iceberg. The existing feeders, transformers, switchgear, or service may already be near their limits.

That’s why we like to answer the bigger question first: How much power does your building actually have available? Before a major renovation or equipment purchase, Advantage Electric can evaluate the existing electrical system, calculate the anticipated loads, and determine what needs to change. The answer might be a new panel or transformer. It might be a service upgrade. And sometimes, the existing system can handle more than you think.

This is becoming especially important with EV charging, electrification, and larger HVAC equipment. One charger may be easy. Ten chargers in a parking ramp are a different conversation. Planning the electrical infrastructure around where the property is headed—not just what it needs today—can save a lot of expensive rework later.

The worst time to discover that your building doesn’t have enough power is after the new equipment arrives. If you’re planning a tenant build-out, adding equipment, installing EV charging, or expanding your Minneapolis/St. Paul commercial property, talk to Advantage Electric early.
